Abstract

Fiji has a total population of 861000, of this 56% live in urban areas. The average life expectancy for males is 66 years and for females is 73 years. Fiji spends 4.9% of its gross domestic product on health 16
The country comprises an archipelago of more than 332 islands, of which 110 are permanently inhabited, and more than 500 islets, amounting to a total land area of circa 18,300 square kilometers (7, 100 sq mi). The two major islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, account for 87% of the population of almost 850,000 The former contains Suvaa the capital and largest city. Most Fijians live on Viti Levu's coasts, either in Suva or in smaller urban centers. Viti Levu's interior is sparsely inhabited due to its terrain. 17
The colonial war memorial hospital is the largest hospital in Fiji, It caters for the most densely populated areas in Fiji; the Suva to Nausori corridor. The Colonial War Memorial hospital has the most established gastroscopy units in Fiji. The establishment of the unit has been due the assistance of the World Gastroenterology Organization.
Lowe highlighted how common dyspepsia is in Fiji whereby in 1997 there were a total of 300 patients who had been admitted to divisional hospitals. He also highlighted that $160 000 from the national health budget ($4 million) had been used in the drugs used for the treatment of dyspepsia in 1999. Since the nineties gastroenterology services has improved greatly in Fiji. 8
In partnership with the Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA), the World Gastroenterology Organization Training Center at the Fiji School of Medicine (FSM) was officially inaugurated on October 26; 2008.this initiative was taken to bridge the divide in training in gastroenterology. The Gastroenterological Society of Australia's Fiji Training Team (GESAFiTT) members contribute to training in gastroenterology by multiple visits.

There have been earlier visits by gastroenterologists Fiji for training. In a teaching report in 2010 it was stated "Helicobacter pylori appear prevalent, although there is limited knowledge as to the true prevalence of disease". There has been no statistical data available on H pylori in any of the pacific islands.16
