Abstract

Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding (UGIB) is a semi-common medical/surgical condition that has high rates of morbidity. A study conducted in a hospital in San Diego California in the USA showed that the annual incidence of hospitalization for acute UGI bleeding was 102 per 100,000; the incidence was twice as common in males as in females, and increased with age1
Here in Fiji no exact Studies have been conducted to look at the rates of this condition. However a medical professional working in either the medical or surgical department in any of the three main hospitals will be able to tell you that they have seen significant numbers of people that can present with this condition.
UGIB is a condition that can be managed by either the medical or surgical specialty. It can be managed either conservatively or by surgical intervention with favorable outcomes.
