Abstract

Asthma is the disease of the airways and diagnosis is mainly clinical. Asthmatics harbor a special type of inflammation in airways that makes them more responsive than non asthmatics to a wide range triggers leading to recurrent episodes of wheezing, chest tightness, breathlessness and coughs. The increasing global prevalence especially in the South Pacific, the large burden it places it imposes on patients and increasing health costs is leading towards placing more emphasis on the prevention aspect of the management of asthma.
Moreover, a study done in the UK in 1996 looking at the "Outbreak of asthma" following a thunderstorm concluded that thunderstorm associated asthma was related to aeroallergens putting an increase in the demand for resources in terms of equipment, drugs and doctors.
