Abstract

Gastritis simply means inflammation of the stomach lining. When there is an injury or weakness to the mucus-lined barrier, which protects the stomach, this allows the digestive juices to damage and inflame the stomach lining. In acute gastritis, the pain usually lasts for a short period of time and the pain can be described as irritating or severe pain whereas chronic gastritis comes on more slowly and can last for months to years and the pain can be described as a more consistent dull ache( l )
A study highlighted that the prevalence of gastritis is approximately 6.3 per 100,000 individuals worldwide (2). In the United States, approximately 1.8-2. I million people visit the doctor each year with symptoms of gastritis (3). According to the global disease burden, in the Oceania region, Kiribati has the highest incidence of 0.6% morbidity rate per 100,000 people (4). When comparing it to the world statistical level, in the same year of 2013, the Oceania region had 1.2 % morbidity rate per 100,000 people whereas the world statistics had 0.8% morbidity rate per 100,000 people(4). This statistic clearly shows that gastritis cases are highly concentrated in the Pacific region in comparison with the international figure.
